It is an honor and pleasure to represent District Two on the City Council, where my colleagues and I work to keep Stevens Point thriving as a vibrant community and local economy. My colleagues and I are proud of all the growth taking place, with Stevens Point seeing $214 million in net new construction in the last four years.

Even a wonderful town like ours can’t afford to rest on its laurels. In the City’s new strategic plan (many of you gave input through an online survey), it says that preserving the community’s strengths while updating for the future should be a matter of both/and, not either/or. Our local politics don’t always follow that idea, but it’s key to our future success.

At a time of pandemic, the need to be nimble and creative has been all the more urgent, and the Council responded with: grants to help small businesses make rent, relaxing deadlines for property tax payments, helping tavern owners serve more of their customers outdoors, and adjusting developer agreements to keep the projects at Lullaby & Kmart sites on track. Other items from my record as an alderperson are listed below. I hope it gives constituents a basis to vote for me in April to serve another term.

My Record In Three Terms On City Council

  • First councilmember to call for getting rid of overnight parking restrictions.

  • Pressed for TDS to replace their ugly green cable pedestals with enclosures that are flush to the ground.

  • Worked with constituents on: painting the crosswalk at Minnesota  & Simonis to calm traffic; reseeding the boulevard on 4th Ave after  street construction; getting the alley improved between Main &  College St.

  • As chair of the Personnel Committee, led a move to increase salaries at the bottom rungs of the pay scale.

  • Got ‘No Parking’ zones adjusted on certain streets for traffic safety, driveway access, or snow removal. And when the new Michigan Ave bike lanes eliminated free parking next to the UWSP ball fields, I requested that spots be opened up on 4th Ave east of Michigan.

  • Lead advocate for extending Sixth Ave (former laundromat site) to open a pedestrian path between campus and N. Division.

  • Taking the Police and Fire Commission to task over their lack of transparency in handling the former police chief.

  • Our progress on bike- and pedestrian-friendliness was recognized with the awarding of League of American Bicyclists Silver Status.

For many of these items, I need to thank and give credit to the District Two constituents who raised their concern and spurred me to follow through. If you ever have a question or concern, don't hesitate to contact me at StevensPointersForShorr@gmail.com
